Starting with an early settlement dating from about 1600 years ago, Jakarta has grown to become a densely populated city and the capital of Indonesia. Jakarta has always been a center for trade. The old capital, Batavia, was the main port city for the Dutch East India Company, and was known around the world as a source of wealth through commerce.
